I would firstly want to start off by how I ended up doing this course. It was never my first choice, the course i originally selected wasn't being offered, I was very sad. Finding out I still needed to select an Elective "IS" caught my eye immediately. The reason for this selection all revolved around what the Module Description and Objectives were:
MODULE DESCRIPTION
This module addresses aspects of the development and usage of IS innovations within an organizational and global context. It also examines the role and application of current and emerging technologies used to communicate and collaborate, and issues associated with their usage. Topics include innovation sources, innovation cycle and web technologies.
MODULE OBJECTIVES
Upon completion of the module, the student should be able to:
i. Understand the nature and importance of the technological innovation process
ii. Research emerging and innovative technologies and how they have reshaped modern organizations and society
iii. Explore the dynamics involved in producing technological innovations
iv. Examine the linkages between technology innovation and organizational factors

v. Examine innovative ways in which businesses communicate and collaborate and how they re-engineer internal and external business processes
vi. Investigate the methods and practices of developing and applying innovative products and technologies in an organizational context
vii. Recognize the importance of technological innovation in solving business problems and creating organizational competitive advantage
viii. Understand the role of web technologies in promoting communication and collaboration and in delivering organizational value
ix. Demonstrate usage and management of web collaboration tools to enhance team communication
x. Understand the issues and challenges associated with new technologies and innovation
Being the person I am I had to take the journey along this path. What interest me the most about the course were the labs. The lab were held once a week and each lab focus on a specific Innovative Technology, some known to me others not so much. Each lab I got the chance to use these Technology to carry out set task.
Doing these task open my mind to the unlimited possibilities that await a young entrepreneur as myself. WHY? A lot of people may not know this, but I have a hand full of hobbies that I en-gauge in from time to time. Activities such as Farming, Photography, and the occasionally Tech Support. Now being expose to these technologies has given me new ideas in the areas of marketing my upcoming skills as a photographer and marketing my farm produce in order to have a competitive advantage.
In our Tutorial and Lecture classes with look more in dept at how IS innovation and Emerging Technologies really affected our day to day lives and how they made a break a business. With the knowledge I gained from these classes I am better enabled as an individual going into the working word. I am currently start a new business with my brother in the IT sector more specifically the marketing of networking products and tech support. For what I have gain, one can enter a market that already has others that are doing the same as you planned, but with the right approach and innovative technology I stand the chance of surpassing my competitors.
Overall IS innovation and emerging technologies has showed me what an individual who refuse to think inside a small box can achieve once he step out take risk, and try new things. This is the individual I intend to become. DIFFERENT FROM THE DAY TO DAY WORKING MAN. I PLAN TO BE A INNOVATOR. I PLAN TO BE A ENTREPRENEUR!!!
Does the recession help to drive innovation?
Lets first start off by making sure you fully understand the main terms here.
- Recession as stated by Dictionary.com as it relates to economics. "a period of an economic contraction, sometimes limited in scope or duration."
- Innovation as stated by Dictionary.com says "introduction of new things or methods."
With alternative operating systems, open source software and cloud computing all gaining traction, technological innovation seems to be hotting up. Was an economic downturn just what the IT sector needed?
The word "Recession" is the buzzword around the globe these days and has become the most famous word. As I can't say that it has become the most famous "brand". There is a positive side too; now companies are becoming more focused, realizing the value of managing costs and taking action to improve the customer loyalty and Brand image
Necessity, the cliché tells us, is the mother of invention. And today, unlike the relatively comfortable preceding decade, there is an abundance of necessity: the necessity for IT departments to perform technological miracles with evaporating budgets, for example, or the necessity for IT vendors to persuade customers to continue spending money.
